The Psychiatric Misdiagnosis of Women

Over the course of history, we have seen many instances of psychiatric misdiagnosis with people. Such instances are often attributed to specific stigmas and stereotypes against certain groups of people, whether it had to do with gender, age, or race.

History

Over the course of history, women have been subjected to many instances of misdiagnosis as a result of prejudice. Women have been very misunderstood and have fallen victims to bias created by members in society that have led to the misinterpretation of their symptoms. Part of the problem was disregarding environmental factors and other biological factors when interpreting the psychopathology of women.

The Misdiagnosis

Oftentimes, physical illnesses and conditions cause psychological and psychiatric symptoms in women. These physiological disorders are sometimes at the root of certain mental problems that are showcased by women. Many physiological conditions present symptoms that are fairly similar to those of depression, anxiety, and more. For example, certain brain conditions like epilepsy can manifest the same symptoms as bipolar disorder.

The Problem

Showing a lack of understanding of the correlation between physical and mental disorders and conditions is extremely problematic to women who are struggling. Women experience a handful of hormonal imbalances, environmental triggers, and gender-related stereotypes throughout their lives. This is, indeed, one of the many problems that the mental health community seeks to tackle when eradicating the stigma pertaining to problems that relate to mental health.
