The Royal Scandal: Racism & Mental Health

Trigger warning: this article mentions depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts

On the 8th of January in 2021, Prince Harry and Megan Markle announced that they would be leaving the Royal Palace and their duties. However, what sparked astonishment was the interview with Oprah Winfrey, where Markle proceeded to bring to light the issues she had faced throughout her marriage – that of racism and a deterioration in her mental health.

This incident brings to light the fact that inherent racism is still present and that Markle was suffering all this time and had failed to ask for assistance. This shows the prevalence of mental health being silenced and not spoken about.

Racism and Mental Health

Studies have shown a correlation between racism and a deterioration in mental health. Various issues include suicidal thoughts, depression, and anxiety, in addition to PTSD. The inherent racism in society is quite detrimental to mental health. This is not to say that the racism led to Markle’s mental health being impacted, as no studies explicitly state that. However, the correlation is concerning enough.

The Importance of Talking About It

Markle explained on the Oprah Winfrey show that she was suffering from suicidal thoughts and depression.

What Markle did was a very important step forward. She spoke about her hardships endured and was not afraid to admit to her vulnerabilities. This shows how important it is to speak about what one is going through and to seek the help needed. Many could relate to Markle and what she had brought to light, and this could push them to also speak about what they need help with. Many find it hard to speak about their experiences and hardships because they are afraid of being ostracized. Markle broke the barrier, and her move has its positive impacts.
