What is it: OCPD?

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder is “characterized by a pervasive preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control that ultimately slows or interferes with completing a task.” People with OCPD often do not trust others with their tasks. Hence, they often embark on their endeavors on their own.

Signs & Symptoms

People with OCPD are extremely stubborn with how things are done. They like things to be done in a certain way always, and they have no room for any sort of flexibility on the matter. They are the kind of people that are extremely fond of schedules, planning, and lists. For them, it is something that maintains the perfectionism and ensures orderliness. Unfortunately, their obsessiveness over the tiniest of details often causes them extreme delays in completing their tasks and is often a waste of time.

Due to their rigidness, their work and productivity are often their biggest priorities. Because of this, they often neglect other relationships in their lives, whether it was a romantic relationship or a friendship. They often think that things like that can be a waste of their time. Their way of expressing affection is also very formal and stiff in nature. They do not focus on emotions as much and, instead, focus on logic.

Treatment

Treating personality disorders may be tricky in general. However, in this case, psychotherapy and medication are often recommended. Psychodynamic therapy and cognitive=behavioral therapy are the approaches that are most advised. Certain antidepressants are also recommended to accompany the therapy. Otherwise, whatever general approach is taken with personality disorders as a whole is also often used with OCPD.
