What is it: Emotional Processing?

Emotional processing refers to the natural process we undergo in order to emotionally heal ourselves. However, not everyone is able to process emotions the same way, or even in a successful manner. You may not process your own emotions the same way every single time either – problems differ in nature!

Emotions

Emotions are a very important focus in therapy. Understanding our emotions and confronting them is a very crucial step taken towards the completion of successful therapy. Understanding our desires and what is behind each emotion often helps us reach a very adequate level of self-understanding. Furthermore, such a step helps us find compassion towards ourselves and helps us stay motivated, which leads to improvement in our mental well-being.

Emotions are healthy for us. Not allowing ourselves to feel and process them could often backfire on us badly. Processing emotions, even the uncomfortable ones, and confronting them gives you the ability to become stronger and more resilient.

Basic Steps to Processing

Therapy is often a great way to help yourself process and regulate your emotions because you are working with a professional towards a specific goal. Furthermore, you are in a judge-free environment that allows you to express yourself fully with no consequences.

However, if therapy is not something you can do, there are definitely other things you can do for yourself to help you process. First and foremost, allow yourself to feel your emotions. Do not immediately move towards blocking them out and numbing yourself. Remind yourself that it is okay to feel whatever it is that you are feeling. Secondly, do not judge your emotions as being something bad or wrong. Feelings are never bad, and they are never wrong. They are yours to honor. Make sure to honor yourself by honoring your emotions.

Emotional processing is not something that is very easy to do. It is often easier said than done. Hence, take your time with the process and do not rush yourself. With time, you will learn what is best for you.
