The Stigma Associated with the Field of Arts

With the advent of industrialism in the 19th century, engineers, doctors, and businessmen were deemed as a requisite for the economic diversification that was occurring back then, which singled out anything related to the field of arts. This led to the stigmatization of any hobby or career that is connected to the field of arts. The field of arts has been degraded and looked down upon, thus making many people reluctant about pursuing a career in the field. This also leads to the marginalization of the field, in which it is treated as a second-class citizen compared to other fields. In the Arab society, teens are compelled to pick careers that would supposedly guarantee them an excellent wage or even employment in general. Creative people who wish to pursue a career in that field are usually scorned since they are taking a step further and not only keeping it as a hobby.

Like Science, Art Is Found Everywhere

When talking about the field of arts, many think that it only entails drawing or painting, which are obviously the quintessential elements of art. However, the field entails painting, drawing, dancing, playing an instrument, creative writing, photographing, etc. As shown, it is a very broad field that includes disciplines utilized in our daily lives. The field of arts literally produces the books you read, the movies you love, the decorations you admire, and the music you immensely enjoy. Not to mention that even the logos for any brand is graphically designed, which also falls under art. Perhaps art is prevalent everywhere, but we do misunderstand the true meaning behind what art means. Again, many believe that art is grabbing a pencil and sketching whatever comes to your mind. Art is anything that forces you to be creative and make something out of nothing. Without art professionals, there would not be the extremely intricate yet mesmerizing art pieces we have today. Whether it is writing, design, or music, art has rendered the world transcend from dullness to vividness.

The Field of Arts Is a Huge Pro for the Economy

It is said that art has little to no contribution to the market or the economy in general, and it is just a romanticized career that does not augment the economy as a whole. However, this is a huge fallacy as arts have proven to be extremely efficacious to the economy, but many still remain oblivious towards it. According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the arts sector is an industry worth 730$ billion, which employs over 4.8 million art workers annually. Moreover, the arts field is a pertinent factor that drives tourism. For example, Expo 2020 is a perfect example of aggregates of pieces of art that attracted tourists globally. Expo 2020 has been very successful and has bolstered the number of tourists coming to the UAE.

How Ks Stigma Still Associated with the Field?

Although many reasons as to why the field of arts is efficient have already been stated, it is still heavily stigmatized. Many people who major in the field of arts do not receive equal recognition as the people who major in the medical or engineering field. That is due to the preconceived notion that such a degree is much more prestigious than a degree in the field of arts. This is obviously not the case. Art majors have the potential ability to enchant a novel culture or even ignite a social movement that can be revolutionary. Artists are just as capable as scientists are.
