Finding the Right Therapist

As much as we might hate to admit it when we need help the most, finding the right therapist is not always the case from the very first try.

Therapy

Therapy includes many different forms. Hence, therapists often specialize in many different cases, and they come from many different backgrounds. Some therapists like to focus on a specific set of disorders, while others like to focus on a specific age group of people. Hence, we cannot expect that one therapist knows how to deal with and treat every single kind of mental disorder there is – and, we know, there are many.

Finding the Right Therapist

Ultimately, given that therapy is very personal, it is only natural for human connection and comfort to be at the core of finding the right therapist. If you felt uncomfortable or unconnected with one therapist, do not be discouraged! It is a lot more common than you might think it is. Think of a very simple example. If you were shopping for new jeans, you might sometimes look in multiple stores before choosing the ones that fit you just right.

When it comes to therapy, you need to make sure not to settle. The key is to feel extremely comfortable with and connected to your therapist. It is also very important that you know that it is your right to ask your therapist specific questions and guide them towards what makes you comfortable. If there is a part of your treatment that you are not fond of, let your therapist know! You are also often encouraged to seek different professional opinions should you feel more comfortable doing so. Sometimes, it can give you an ease of mind, and, other times, it can get you an even better opinion or perspective about your condition.
