The Importance of Hugging Your Loved Ones

It is no secret that hugs are comforting, but have you ever wondered why?

Human Connections

Human touch activates the orbitofrontal cortex, an area of the brain linked with compassion and reward. Hugs provide the touch needed to create connections of affection and trust. It can calm stress and also makes one feel loved and less alone.

Hugs stand as a form of communication in relationships and can aid in strengthening them. They can convey messages that words cannot on a deeper, more intimate level. Furthermore, human touch releases oxytocin, which improves bonds and makes us feel more connected to one another.

Hugs and Health

Hugs reduce stress levels as physical connections are associated with lowering cortisol levels. This can prevent issues such as sleep disorders, promote healthier skin, and prevent obesity and low immunity.

The reduced stress lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular health. Hence, it can be said that hugs reduce risk of heart disease, strokes, or cardiovascular infractions.

Hugging also aids in boosting self-esteem. The human touch is underrated and can be a very powerful tool. It conveys safety, love, and connection. A hug can remind us that we belong

Scientists have also found that touch can reduce anxiety in people with low self-esteem. They found that touching inanimate objects such as a teddy bear also helped reduce fears.

Hugging releases endorphins that improve circulation. This can be a pain reliever, especially for people suffering with chronic issues.

Virginia Satir, a family therapist, suggests that “we need four hugs for survival – 8 hugs for maintenance and 12 hugs for growth.”

In this busy world where everyone is transfixed by their phones and there is a clear social dilemma, hugs are in need. They can help resolve the issue of loneliness that arises from the social dilemma.

Next time you see a loved one, do not forget to wrap them in your warm embrace!
