Spirituality & its Impact on Mental Health

Being spiritually awakened is a sense of connection and feeling of a presence bigger than ourselves. It helps awaken a person and look further within for a deeper understanding in themselves. In other words, it helps those understand the greater answer of how they fit in with the rest of the world and understanding their own interpretation of the meaning of life. Spirituality incorporates different practices such as health, holistic healing, shadow work, and mindfulness. Practicing spirituality has no rules on what you should do and what you should not, although incorporating such practices into your life can be beneficial to you mentally and physically.

Understanding Spirituality

Although there are no rules on spirituality, understanding it may be complex. Spirituality begins within you accepting yourself and the society around you and seeking beyond what is in front of you. Practicing spirituality enhances your perception of life. You begin to realize that there is much more to your life than what you believe, bringing you a sense of empowerment and control over your thoughts and wellbeing.

People describe their spiritual experiences to be a deep sense of aliveness as a sacred interconnectedness. Some may find their spirituality linked to their religious beliefs, given that some may pray and find comfort in their own religious higher power. Spirituality does not have any limits as people find their own connections through nature, developing a sense of purpose. Each person has their own definition of spirituality, adapting to their own experiences.

Holistic Healing

Holistic healing is the practice of wellness through nature that begins with healing the internal and external factors affecting a person. Holistic healing allows maintaining and restoring your mind, body, and soul. Rather than focusing on certain conditions or illnesses, holistic healing disperses all parts of the individual. This particular practice is an alternative to pharmaceutical medicine. However, it may not be the answer to all illnesses, and it is an enhancer. In fact, it can heal you in a different and natural approach if practiced correctly. Holistic healing is not limited to certain individuals. This practice can be part of your lifestyle.

Some of the types of holistic healing –

  • Yoga
  • Body massage
  • Reiki Healing
  • Herbal medicine
  • Clean-eating diet
  • Acupuncture
  • Meditation
  • Art therapy
  • Sound therapy
  • Shilajit

Shadow Work

In order for you to understand shadow working, you must be able to identify your own shadow. The shadow consists of several parts of ourselves that we suppress, hide, and push away – parts of ourselves that are negative and toxic. We tend to do this subconsciously during the early stages of development in our childhood.

Examples of our shadows include jealousy, selfishness, self-centeredness, narcissism, shameful experiences, fears and phobias, and aggressive impulses. These negative aspects lead to toxic behaviors that can be seen as we get older and are much more aware of our reactions. However, certain behaviors that we do not realize are harmful may include judging others, playing victim, showing off, and being entitled.

Keeping your shadow hidden and being unaware can impact you in these negative forms –

  • Addictions
  • Social anxiety
  • OCD
  • Depressive episodes
  • Self-sabotage
  • Narcissism
  • Limiting your beliefs
  • Unusual sexual behaviors

Affirmations

Affirmations are positive phrases or mantras that can help you overcome self-sabotage and negative thoughts. Affirmations can help you overcome stress, anxiety, and any negative aspect of yourself. Using repetitive affirmations and mantras over time could allow you to manifest and believe that what you are saying is true.

Affirmations are a powerful way of changing your thinking habits and thought processes. You must truly believe in yourself and that whatever affirmation you are saying is true and will come true. You must be able to feel it inside you.

When using mantras to manifest, you must have a clear mind with no negative thoughts or judgment. When using this technique, speak these words into existence, say them out loud, and believe them. You can also use these phrases while looking at yourself in the mirror and using the word “you”. For example, “you are beautiful,” “you are wealthy,” “you have abundance,” etc. When using “you” at the beginning of the sentence, you are allowing your brain to believe it subconsciously.
