Job Burnout

Have you ever felt demotivated in your job, as though there is not anything that matters? Have you ever felt this loss of connection with your characterization, with overabundant stressors and anxiety that do not make anything easier? If you have, then chances are, you have probably suffered from job burnout. Job burnout is linked to being emotionally worn out, suffering from negative feelings towards your job, low commitment to it, and not being present in it as much. Burnout is also associated with decreased personal accomplishment, and this can be very detrimental to mental health.

Effects of Burnout

Burnout has a number of effects, not only psychologically but socially as well. Evidence has proved that burnout can have effects on increases in labor turnover, not being present, and decreased productivity. Cynicism is also associated to burnout, and it basically entails you being increasingly negatively detached from the job you are tasked with. In addition, your self-judgment feelings surface as you begin to question your competence, and this, of course, negatively impacts your productivity and belief in yourself and your accomplishments.

It is important to note that burnout has physical symptoms as well. These include headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, and even hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. In addition, muscle tension becomes evident, and so do sleep disturbances and increased predisposition to develop colds.

What increases chances of burnout?

Having active and stressful lives in the workplace can take a toll on a person’s health, and so it is essential for them to rest and calm down in order to have a sort of balance between their work and their personal life. When they do not have this, the chance of getting burnout increases. In addition, feeling limited and restricted also increases the chance of getting burnout. A third factor consists of not receiving a proper reward in your workplace. In other words, when a person feels that they are putting their all into something that does not give them the sense of fulfillment they seek, then this becomes problematic and negatively impacts them. A fourth factor is not having a proper community of supporters in your job. More so, having an unfair superior also negatively impacts your work experience. In addition, it is important to note that a person’s values should intertwine with the job’s values as well. Otherwise, this will also become another problematic issue.

Working Towards Decreasing Burnout

A couple of important steps must be taken in order to be able to reduce output, individually and socially speaking. Thesesteps are as follows:

  • First and foremost, it is important that you evaluate what tasks are really taking a lot of your energy, and in which you may procrastinate. After that, make sure you allocate your time properly so that you can ease the workload tension and fix up your schedule. It is also important to take a minute to breathe.
  • Another important point is to make a plan that is long-term, sufficient, assists you in being efficient, and makes you feel more productive and better.
  • A third essential point is finding social support. We all need a friend during tough times, and this can, of course, ease this emotional rollercoaster we may be going through.
  • A fourth point that all of us can learn from is needing to change your environment once you find out that it does not suit your values, and that you are not benefitting from it. When we place our all into certain jobs and work that does not give us much in return, this infinitely giving process becomes redundant and simply succeeds at taking a toll on your mental health. When this occurs, please do yourself a favor, and relieve yourself of this toxic environment.

Job burnout is a real issue. It takes a toll on your emotions and your well-being if you do not do something about it. Anytime you feel even the slightest intuition that maybe the workplace you are in is not such a good environment, do not hesitate to look elsewhere for a job. Your mental health should be your top concern regardless of any important priorities you may have because it affects every aspect of your life – even your productivity, which is probably what you may want to excel at. Do not hesitate to contact a friend or a relative and inform them of your situation if you ever find yourself in it. Remember that having support is extremely beneficial. On a final note, keep in mind that having a balanced state at work is extremely important. This means that it is essential to allocate your time properly for work and for activities outside of work, so you can take a chance to relax and rest.
